In Process
For Art’s Night Out, the Lansing Art’s Council has given me the opportunity to display a selection of pieces that have been under development during my recent practice. These paintings range in the amount of paint they’ve accumulated and clarity they’ve opened up to.
This first, largest piece comes from a halloween party. The masks draw a parallel to James Ensor’s work, as well as the performative aspect of personality, informing its title: “The Notion of Self”
“Garfield”, named because of its color scheme and its subject consisting of a field, is a personal favorite. Orange to Green and everything in between is a color scheme I find a lot of value in as it always pops while remaining naturalistic.
I Don’t Want to Leave This is a love letter to sunrises after long nights and the times we savor every second of.
Under the Hood
For this exhibition, I want to give you clear access to the chaotic, colorful mark making and thinking process that underlies my interpretation of images. Everything gets broken down and approximated, producing an abstract field of marks that will get build upon or superseded by subsequent layers. The picture is pushed and pulled until, upon stepping back, things start to make sense.
There is no true point of conclusion. Previously I’ve regarded any public display of my work as the marker of completion, but with many of these being closer to their initial marks than any work I’ve ever shown, who’s really to say? Why would paintings exempt from the ever changing nature of all things? is a “finished product” truly the goal? Maybe questions are teeming with life and possibility, while answers have their end.
I hope you were able to enjoy these pieces in person, I’d like to thank the Lansing Arts Council for giving me this opportunity, as well as everyone around me who has supported my growth thus far. Feel free to check out the rest of my site and browse pieces for sale, including the ones you see here.
